What landlords and buyers need to know

Residential rental licensing

Since January 1, 2026 every Brampton landlord renting a property with 1 to 4 units needs a free City rental licence, $2 million liability insurance and an online landlord course. Fines for renting without one are $750, $1,250 and $1,500.

Development charges (new homes)

From Aug 1, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027: about $155,650 per new single or semi-detached home, $124,238 per townhouse and $60,719 per small apartment (City + Region of Peel + school boards), indexed every February and August. Peel's temporary 50% cut to regional charges runs to Nov 13, 2026. Builders pay these and build them into prices.

Transit that changes values

Hazel McCallion (Hurontario) LRT: under construction to Brampton Gateway Terminal; completion reported for 2027–2028 before testing. Downtown LRT tunnel: announced, no completion date. Kitchener GO: Metrolinx is buying CN track toward all-day two-way service. Highway 413: eastern-section procurement launched Sept 2026. Queen St–Hwy 7 BRT: in planning.
